Our Daily Bread

Focusing on the portion of The Lord’s Prayer, “Give us this day our daily bread,” it’s important to realize that there is one seemingly insignificant word in this phrase: daily. The Hebrew word we translate as daily is epiousian. The problem is that “daily” doesn’t capture the true and deepest meanings of epiousian which different syllables mean; epi means “on,” “in,” “upon,” or “to” while ousios means “essence.” It’s a bit of a guess but epiousian seemingly means “that which is needed for us to be” or “that which is essential.” The only thing for us to discover is what is the “bread” we need? Here’s a hint: Jesus called himself “the bread of life.”
