Jesus tells us that we should give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. People often take this as a Biblical mandate of the separation of Church and State, and never shall the two intersect in any way. But Jesus, when he took our human form, entered into a world of political systems. Jesus was put to death through political manipulation, a rigged jury system, and was killed by a huge political empire interested in keeping the peace by putting Jesus to death as an insurrectionist. Jesus said we should pay the government their due, and we do – because not paying the government its due results in a jail sentence. The greater question is, are we paying God what is due?
