“Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God,” says John to the Christians of the first-century church; “everyone who loves is born of God and knows God” (1 John 4:7). This is a word that our fractured world desperately needs to hear, where tension continues to exist between Christians and Muslims in a post-9/11 world, where political adversaries cannot civilly discuss important issues, where people of different colors fear each other. “Whoever does not love does not know God,” John goes on to say, “for God is love” (v. 8).
