Bartholomew/Nathanael the Guileless

Guile is a word that is not often used and guileless is probably used even less. When Philip brought Jesus to meet Nathaniel, Jesus proclaimed, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” The word “deceit” is translated as “guile” in the King James Version of scripture. Nathaniel’s legacy is one of contemplation and seeking. Philip knew that if his friend wasn’t fishing he was in his garden meditating. What does it mean to be a person who seeks the truth within our scriptures? Nathaniel knew that the Messiah was not going to be from Nazareth, so he asked, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?”
