Gun Safety Advocacy

Gun Safety Advocacy

On Wednesday, March 22nd, 2023 nine people from Central Church traveled to Lansing to join other United Methodists in advocating for common sense gun safety legislation. The group had several meetings scheduled with our state Senators and Representatives to have discussions around proposed gun safety legislation that was moving through both chambers. The objective of the meetings was to ask our legislators to support the proposed legislation, as well as to tell our stories about the impact that gun violence has had on us as individuals.

The group of over 350 Methodists that met in Lansing is continuing to advocate for common-sense gun legislation, including:

  1. Safe Storage – would require guns in homes with children to be locked away safely.
  2. Universal Background Checks – for all firearm purchases (versus handguns, as the law now reads).
  3. Extreme Risk Protection Orders – allow judges to temporarily remove firearms from individuals that may be at risk of harming themselves or others.

Help us continue advocating for gun safety legislation by sending a letter/email to your representatives (download here).
