Even as Jesus enters the last week of his earthly ministry, there seem to be questions about his identity. We’re told in Matthew that the whole city was in turmoil and even as Jesus was riding into Jerusalem, people were asking “Who is this?” Palm Sunday is one of the most joyful days of the Christian year. It’s a day that involves a king and a colt, plus crowds and cloaks. Jesus arrives in Jerusalem as a king. He’s riding on a colt. And crowds are laying their cloaks on the ground before him as he rides. They cry, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Matthew 21:9). The people are tired of corrupt King Herod. They want Jesus to be their ruler. But what does that mean for the people following Jesus into the ancient city and what does it mean for us today? Based on Psalm 118:1-2, 19-29, Matthew 21:1-11 and Philippians 2:5-11.
