Christ Challenged! Lenten Message Series
Jesus deals with his enemy, the Pharisees, with a bit of sardonic humor by pointing out their hypocrisy as the Pharisee cares only about their outward appearance and not the cultivation of their inwards spirits. Jesus does so in Luke’s Gospel through the telling of a parable. With a more serious tone, Jesus speaks about the Pharisees in a series of “Woe unto the Pharisees!” sayings in Matthew’s gospel. So, the lighter approach of Jesus’ Parable takes on a more serious tone in Matthew’s sharing of Jesus’ indictment of the Pharisee’s hypocrisy and double standard treatment of those who are not of their privileged class.
