The text from Samuel is about the selection of David to be the anointed King of Israel, but it is also about human nature. We are reminded that “the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” (Verse 7) The critical questions we must address from this text are: 1) How do we look for God at work in unlikely places? 2) How can we develop a more intentional process of suspending our “appearance biases?” 3) Who is God calling us to give a chance to, to take a chance on, to anoint?
