Based on John 6:56-69. In this passage from John’s sixth chapter, people are deciding whether or not they can really follow Jesus. Jesus is certainly the bread of life, however, people have had enough “bread” and they push away from the table and leave. The key text in the question of Jesus: “Do you also want to go away?” Why do people find Jesus just a bit too rich for their tastes? Too filling? Too much? On the other hand, why do we stay with Jesus, when it might be easier and safer to go away? Peter’s response is telling: 1) Where would we go to find eternal life, wholeness, and meaning? Nothing compares to Jesus. 2) Jesus has the words of eternal life. What does that mean? 3) We believe and we know that Jesus is the Holy One of God. It’s a good thing to push away from the table when we’re full. But Jesus is our “bread of life.” He must be a part of our spiritual diet every day.
