In all the lists of disciples in the New Testament, Judas Iscariot is listed last and it is often mentioned that Judas was a traitor or “the one who betrayed” Jesus. Judas Iscariot is a tragic figure in our Gospels, however, what do we really know of this man who is most simply known as the traitor? He must have been trusted at one time because Jesus put Judas Iscariot in charge of the disciple’s treasury. Even though the scripture put Judas dead last in mentioning the 12, we will mention him first because it is his absence that creates the listing of Jesus’ disciples as the eleven. An absence that perhaps didn’t need to happen; the classic question about Judas is whether or not he is beyond redemption.
