James and his brother, John, were fishermen in the same region as Peter and Andrew. There were known as “Sons of Thunder.” These brothers, along with Peter, were considered to be the inner circle of disciples who were often with Jesus by themselves. Therefore they witnessed many things that the other nine disciples did not. James was hotheaded and zealous about his relationship with Jesus and the good news he was inspired to share. He was so adamant about sharing the good news of Jesus the Christ that he was the first disciple to be martyred by Herod Agrippa, the great-grandson of Herod the Great. Agrippa wanted to squash the new people of the Way, as Jesus’ followers were called, and James, with his outspokenness, zest, and ambition, was a great example to make. Based on Luke 9:51-56 and Mark 1-:32-45.
