Do you remember seeing more fireflies when you were a child? There’s a reason for that. Light pollution confuses these little critters and messes with their mating rituals and they are simply not reproducing as in the past. Pentecost celebrates the fact that tongues of fire rested on each disciple and we realize that when the Spirit fills us, we, too radiate the light of God. There are other lights that truly illumine our lives (education, psychology, art, and culture to name a few.) The issue is whether or not we allow those other lights to overcome the light of Christ in our lives. Even 2000 years after Pentecost, we need to allow the Spirit’s flames to burn brightly in our lives to that we may continue to shine for Christ.
